LYKINS NEIGHBORHOOD METRICS AND IMPLEMENTATION

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Since the Lykins Strategic Development Plan was developed, the Lykins neighborhood has continued to grow their capacity and has attracted leadership and funding to assist community organizing and development. Monthly meetings offer interpretation services in Spanish and Swahili, and each month neighborhood stories are shared and problem-solving on the most pressing community issues occurs. Monthly cleanup days have also encouraged residents that progress is underway and established a regular time to work side by side making a difference in the care and upkeep of their home. With so much underway, the neighborhood is  defining measurements to help track success on community goals. Metrics were prioritized by the neighborhood association through a series of votes at one of their monthly meetings. Residents responded to a variety of options and established three key priorities:

  • Blight reduction

  • Cleanliness of the community

  • Safety of the neighborhood

Reliable data to track measurement was collected and the process confirmed with input from stakeholders including representatives from DataKC, KCMO Dangerous Buildings, the city’s Housing and Development department, and Mattie Rhodes social service agency, a local community partner. As the neighborhood uses this new set of tools to measure progress, they will be able to adapt their projects and initiatives to better meet their priorities. The report metrics help the neighborhood understand recent past trends, where they are now, and helps to set goals and measure successes in the future. Maps and other data from the first report can be seen below the project data.
